LIFE EXPLAINED FOR YOU

On the first day, God created the dog and said, “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this I shall give you a life span of twenty years.”
The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give You back the other ten?"
And God said that that was okay with Him.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I shall give you a life span of twenty-years"
The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give You back ten like the dog did?"
And God said that that was okay with Him.

On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I shall give you a life span of sixty years."
The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give You back the other forty?"
And God said that that was okay with Him.

On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play and enjoy yourselves. For this, I'll give you twenty years."
But the humans said, "Only twenty years? Tell You what! Could You possibly give us the twenty, plus the forty the cow gave back, plus the ten the monkey gave back, plus the ten the dog gave back? That makes eighty. How’s that sit with You?"
And God said that that was okay with Him.
So, that is why for our first twenty years, we humans eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our families. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
Life has now been explained to you.
We hope you appreciate it.
We do this as a public service.

DO YOU HAVE ANY
QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS
ABOUT THE PARISH CONSOLIDATIONS?

If so, please know that I plan to park myself in the Sheridan Room on Monday, 08 June, from 06:00 to 09:00 pm for anyone who wants to stop by for questions or concerns.
I have no idea whether anyone will show up.
If no one shows up, that’s okay by me. I’ll have some quiet time for prayer.
If people do show up, please know that this will not be a “time for personal or private conversation with the pastor”. Anything anyone wants to say or to ask will be heard by anyone else who might happen to be there.
If you have any questions that I am competent to answer, I shall do so with absolute candor.
If I am not competent to answer, I shall refer you to someone who might know the answer.
People can walk in or walk out as they please during the three hours that I shall be there.
I have no plans to make any speeches or presentations of any sort.
I do ask that everyone be respectful of everyone else.
This is a difficult time in Girardville.
The closing of St. Joseph Church is painful.
It is painful for me --- and I have been here only seven years.
I can just imagine how painful it is for those who have been members of the parish for forty, fifty, sixty and seventy years!
When I visited Girardville in June of 2008 — which was after I had been appointed pastor but before the appointment took effect — Fr. Greg Karpyn, who was then finishing his time as pastor here, gave me “the grand tour” of the buildings belonging to the two parishes. I remember thinking that St. Vincent dePaul was pleasing to the eye, a beautiful church. Then he took me over to St. Joseph Church. We walked in from the back of the church and I was stunned! I had never been inside St. Joseph Church before. I said to Fr. Karpyn, “Good grief, Gregory, I feel as though I’ve been made the pastor of a cathedral! This is magnificent!”
Over the past seven years, my feelings for this venerable structure have deepened.
So much history! So much has transpired here!
It is difficult — just about impossible — to balance emotions and logic when talking about our beautiful St. Joseph Church building.
If you choose to drop in to the Sheridan Room tomorrow (Monday) evening, feel free to say what is on your mind.
I shall do my best to turn off my “contradiction button”!
But please be rational and please be fair.
And remember that “I am a man under authority myself”.

So, there we are! Now it’s official! The letter that I printed in the 28 / 29 March bulletin was from Msgr. Gobitas and said simply that it was the Bishop’s “intention” to accept my retirement. The letter reprinted above is from the Bishop himself and is the definitive letter. So, on 01 July 2015, if I’m still breathing, I shall transition from “pastor” to “pastor emeritus” of Girardville. “Pastor Emeritus” has a nice ring to it! By golly, it sounds important! My Mom and Dad would be impressed! Dad would say to Mom, “Pauline, whoever suspected that that younger boy of ours would turn out to be a pastor emeritus? Everyone said that he was a loser!” I shall have to practice saying “pastor emeritus”. I think I’ll walk into Dunkin’ Donuts next month and tell them, “I am the pastor emeritus of Girardville! I should like to have a cup of coffee”. Who knows? They might let me have it for a dollar and a half plus tax! I’ll let you know.

It’s official! Fr. John W. Bambrick, currently pastor of St. Joseph, Ashland, St. Mauritius, Ashland and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Gordon, will become pastor of the new parish, St. Charles Borromeo, on 01 July 2015. His area of pastoral responsibility will now embrace Girardville, in addition to Ashland and Gordon. I spoke with him this past week and he tells me that he plans to schedule Mass at 08:30 am every Sunday in St. Vincent dePaul Church, Girardville. He will continue to have 04:00 pm Saturday Vigil Mass and 11:00 am Sunday Mass in Ashland. All people of Ashland, Girardville and Gordon (and elsewhere!) will be welcome at any of these three Masses, as it suits their convenience. We welcome Fr. Bambrick and invoke God’s blessings on him! He is a tried-and-true priest and a long-time friend.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT BRUCE / CAITLYN JENNER

I referred to the pathetic anomaly known as Bruce Jenner a bulletin or two ago.
I said, as I recall, that I think the poor man is mentally ill.
Now, there has come a new development. His photo graced the cover of the latest edition of Vanity Fair.
I don’t read Vanity Fair, but I did see the cover on the Internet.
My reaction was a mixture of horror and disgust.
Now I’m not too sure that Bruce / Caitlyn is mentally ill.
But, for his sake, I hope that he is.
If he is not mentally ill, then he is profoundly wicked.
And yet, the President of the United States tweeted in regard to Bruce / Caitlyn Jenner:
“It takes courage to share your story. Your story matters in the fight for LGBT rights!”
Thanks a lot, Mr. Obama!
Thanks a lot, Mr. President!
Thank you for giving us no doubt whatsoever as to where you stand in the great struggle between Archangel Michael and Lucifer!
Let me make a few points here:
There are two kinds of human beings: MALE and FEMALE.
Maleness and Femaleness are not qualities of the body only.
They are qualities of the soul.
The souls of every human being are either MASCULINE or FEMININE.
They are immutably masculine or feminine, even into eternity.
The masculinity or femininity of the human soul can be known with absolute certainty by a cursory glance at the anatomy. (The body is the sacrament of the soul.)

Male anatomy = Masculine soul.
Female anatomy = Feminine soul.

It’s not rocket science, pardon the cliché!
For millennia, midwives and doctors and nurses and birth attendants have been pulling babies out of their mothers and, after a quick glance at the child’s nether region, have announced with confidence to the bystanders one or the other of the following two phrases: “IT’S A BOY!” or “IT’S A GIRL!”
(As I recall, when I was born, the doctor announced, “It’s a boy!” His pronouncement was precisely correct. My experience over the past 77 years has provided me with more than sufficient verification of that doctor’s perspicacity!)
But anatomy is not the foundational reason why someone is male or female, not even in the realm of the physical.
The fundamental physical reason that a person is a male is that he has a pair of chromosomes, in every cell of his body, that are distinct, usually referred to as “XY”.
The fundamental physical reason that a person is a female is that she has a pair of chromosomes, in every cell of her body, that are not distinct, usually referred to as “XX”.
So, Bruce can submit himself to all of the art and all of the skill of all of the most skillful plastic surgeons his Blue Cross / Blue Shield plan plus whatever supplements he has plus his personal financial resources can possibly provide and the bottom line is that he will continue to be an “XY” human being with a masculine soul.
Bruce Jenner is a man. He is not a woman. That is the absolute and inalterable truth!

THE SIMPLEST WAY TO EXPRESS what Christ asks us to believe about the Real Presence is that the Eucharist is really He. The Real Presence is the real Jesus. We are to believe that the Eucharist began in the womb of the Virgin Mary; that the flesh which the Son of God received from His Mother at the Incarnation is the same flesh into which He changed bread at the Last Supper; that the blood He received from His Mother is the same blood into which He changed wine at the Last Supper. Had she not given Him His flesh and blood there could not be a Eucharist.
We are to believe that the Eucharist is Jesus Christ - simply, without qualification. It is God become man in the fullness of His divine nature, in the fullness of His human nature, in the fullness of His body and soul, in the fullness of everything that makes Jesus Jesus. He is in the Eucharist with His human mind and will united with the Divinity, with His hands and feet, His face and features, with His eyes and lips and ears and nostrils, with His affections and emotions and, with emphasis, with His living, pulsating, physical Sacred Heart. That is what our Catholic Faith demands of us that we believe. If we believe this, we are Catholic. If we do not, we are not, no matter what people may think we are.

Father John A. Hardon SJ
