BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH!

Today (15 March) is THE IDES OF MARCH! Today (15 March 2015) is the 2,059th anniversary of the assassination of
JULIUS GAIUS CAESAR!
Caesar exited this life on 15 March 44 BC. He was 56 years old. He is rightly regarded, even today, as someone who made an indelible mark in the history of the human race.
Caesar had been duly warned by a blind soothsayer, several days before the Ides of March, that he should BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH!

On the day itself, his wife, Calpurnia, warned him, even begged him, not to go to the Senate. She had strong premonitions that something bad would happen to him. At first, Caesar was inclined to accept his wife’s advice.
However, he was persuaded by false friends that he should ignore his wife’s advice and follow through with his original plans, viz. to go to the Capitol building to take part in the business of the Senate that day. The false friends hinted that (maybe) the Senate would offer him the imperial crown that day and that this might be a “limited time offer”! So, he shouldn’t miss this opportunity!
Well, we all know how that worked out!
Caesar went to the Senate and was assassinated there by a group of conspirators, among whom was his friend, Marcus Junius Brutus.
According to Plutarch, Caesar’s last words, having already been stabbed multiple times and now seeing Brutus among the assassins, said, “Kai su, teknon?” — which is Greek for “Even you, son?” Shakespeare tweaked this line to “Et tu, Brute?” — which is Latin for “Even you, Brutus?

Among the morals of the story are these: (#1) Caesar was unduly interested in honor and prestige. This proved to be his undoing. We should take note lest we ourselves be led to the slaughter by our desire for honor and prestige.
(#2) If God has given us a good wife, we should listen to her and take her advice. Women tend to be more insightful than men. It is a stupid man who trusts the advice of his “friends” more than he trusts the advice of his wife. I might add that this is especially true when the wife’s advice is backed up by a blind soothsayer!

NEXT SATURDAY, 21 MARCH: There will not be a Mass at 08:00 am. However, there will be a Mass at 10:00 am. This Mass will be in the upper church, not in the chapel. It will be the special “St. Patrick Parade Day Mass”. I invited Msgr. Edward J. Coyle to be the celebrant of this Mass. I am happy to say that he accepted the invitation. It will be good to have Msgr. Coyle back in town for Mass!
NEWS FLASH! HELP IS ON THE WAY FOR SCHUYLKILL COUNTY MOTORISTS!
His Excellency, Governor Wolf has signed a contract with the KRAFT FOOD CORPORATION, manufacturers of JELL-O dessert products! Four hundred tons of Grape JELL-O powder will be delivered to PENNDOT for the filling of potholes throughout Schuylkill County. When asked why grape jello in particular, the Governor smiled and said, “No particular reason. It’s just that KRAFT had some excess of the grape product lying in their warehouse. Apparently, it’s one of their slow sellers. So, they gave us a good deal on it.” That’s okay with me! I like grape, although I would have preferred licorice.

 CHINESE AUCTION NEWS
The total profit from last Sunday’s auction, organized by the Holy Rosary Society of St. Vincent dePaul Parish, came to
Six thousand four hundred eighty four dollars!
That’s $6,484.00.

The winner of the 50-50 was Julia Rutko (Girardville).
The winner of the Lionel train was Eileen Wayne (Girardville).
The winner of the money tree was Kay Hauser (Girardville).
The winner of the TV was Barb David (Ashland).
The winner of the Vera Bradley purses was Angie Zdiera (Ashland).
The winner of the ton of coal was Sandra Jordan (Ashland).

And, of course, there were many, many winners of the smaller prizes.
The Auction was a great success, as it is every year.
Such success doesn’t just “happen”.
It takes lots of planning and good, old fashioned manual labor.
The women of the Holy Rosary Society are an amazing group.
They really know their stuff!
How fortunate our parish is to have them!

(I have only one complaint. Yours truly didn’t win anything! Nothing! Zilch! Nada! Not even a potholder! What kind of a parish auction is it when the pastor goes back home empty-handed? I must have bought a zillion-dollars-worth of tickets! Kateri asked me, “What did you bring me from the Auction?” I had to tell her, “Sorry, kid! Not a thing!” I guess I should correct this slightly. Some lady felt sorry for me and got me a free cup of black coffee! That was nice of her. Oh, well! Maybe next year!)
