THERE WAS A SOCIAL GATHERING in St. Vincent dePaul Rectory after the Tridentine Mass this past Sunday (22 June). Adults and lots of kids. The pizza man arrived and deposited his pizzas on the kitchen table. Someone asked me to say grace. So, I said the usual “Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts …….” Then I ended the prayer with “The pizza of the Lord be with you.” (chuckle, chuckle).
Without missing a beat, nine-year-old Haven Johnson replied, “And with your Sprite!”
I thought that was a remarkably humorous and clever pun — much better than mine, which was kind of obvious. And only nine years old! Are they making kids smarter these days?
I said to Haven’s parents: “That’s bulletin material!”
THANK YOU to Fr. Edmund Brennan for agreeing to celebrate the 08:00 am Masses on Friday (27 June) and Monday (30 June) and the 04:00 pm Mass on Saturday (28 June) plus the 08:30 and 11:30 am Masses on Sunday (29 June). Thanks also to Father Christopher Zelonis for agreeing to celebrate the 05:30 pm Mass on Saturday (28 June). Fr. Connolly will be celebrating the wedding Mass for his grandniece in San Francisco de Asis Church, Flagstaff AZ.

PARENTS OF CHILDREN ENTERING EIGHTH-GRADE!

If I thought that there was a snowball’s chance of getting a response by addressing this to the children themselves, I would do so. However, I find that 13 and 14 year olds are not notably responsive to exhortations delivered in parish-bulletins.
Be that as it may:
We need to draw up a list of candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation from our two parishes.
Please call the Rectory to let us know if you believe that your 8th grade child is a likely candidate for Confirmation in the Fall of this current year (2014).

I AM BEING DELIBERATELY OPTIMISTIC when I interpret this cartoon as implying that the recently deceased gentleman is having his entrance into Heaven delayed, rather than cancelled.
In other words, I hope that the angel / magistrate is saying that the Facebook photos will be able to be deleted in Purgatory. I hope the implication is not that the Facebook photos will be reason for eternal damnation.
Be that as it may, I suggest that anyone reading this bulletin who has a Facebook (or similar social media) account keep in mind that God and the holy angels are well aware of what you have posted there.
And what you have posted there will most definitely be taken into account when you are swooped up for the Particular Judgment.
There is, of course, the distinct possibility that you have some excellent and even virtuous material posted thereon — the kind of things that will lead people closer to God. If so, you will get credit for it in the next life.
On the other hand, if you have anything posted that is obscene or boastful or deceitful, make sure you delete it before you make the transition into Eternity!

 HOLY FATHER
EXCOMMUNICATES
GODFATHER!

“Yo, Boss, I hate to tell you this, but we just got a call from Rome. It was Papa Francesco. He sounded really ticked off! You know who I mean, don’t you? I think he’s sorta like a Capo di tutti cappi. He said to tell you we’re all excommunicated. I ain’t exactly sure what ‘excommunicated’ means, but it don’t sound good. I think he’s disrespectin’ us. We gotta come up with a plan and we gotta do it now, but I don’t think we should take out a contract on him. They say it’s bad luck to bump off a pope! Maybe if we send Michael over to talk with him, he can smooth it over. And maybe a nice donation will change his mind. What do you think?”

NEWS ITEM

by Reuters
21 June 2014

Pope Francis has taken on one of Italy’s most dangerous organized crime groups, calling the 'Ndrangheta crime group an example of “the adoration of evil” and saying Mafiosi “are excommunicated”.
The pope, speaking during a Mass in southern Italy, issued the strongest attacks on organized crime since the late Pope John Paul lambasted the Sicilian Mafia in 1993.
Those who in their lives follow this path of evil, as mafiosi do, are not in communion with God. They are excommunicated,” Pope Francis said in impromptu comments at a Mass before tens of thousands of people.
He told the crowd: “This evil must be fought against, it must be pushed aside. We must say ‘NO’ to it.”
He branded the 'Ndrangheta as the “adoration of evil and contempt of the common good” and said the Church would exert its full force in efforts to combat organized crime.

My comment:
WAY TO GO, HOLY FATHER!
If you want, I can make you up a list of some other worthy candidates for excommunication!
A gal from San Francisco comes to mind for starters. Nancy Somebody or Other.

A REFLECTION ON THE CURRENT WISDOM

Fr. Richard Simon

How painfully, exquisitely tolerant people are expected to be when an old friend comes to a gathering wearing a dress and heels announcing to the old frat buddies that the name is no longer Alexander, but Alexandra. I have no objection to anyone’s fashion choices, but the mutilated former rugby player confronting me is not a woman, no matter how well the hormone shots are working. This is not judgmental, nor is it condemnatory. It is just true.
But Alexander / Alexandra will say, “But I want it this way. It will make me happy. It’s who I really am!”
We have watched entirely too much television and we have lost our minds.
We believed the TV and the movies, and have tried to find happiness by going from bed to bed, from marriage to marriage. We have left behind us a string of broken hearts and homeless children who can’t seem to hold down a job.
The Gospel has always told us that this life is not about happiness. It is about faithfulness and generosity, heroism and the highest human nobility and it actually used to teach that sex was about children!
Now we have a world that believes it should have what it wants and that sex is about me.
I suppose I shouldn’t expect more from the world. Its Prince is a liar and the Father of Lies, but what really alarms me in this madhouse age is that some of those in leadership in the Church seem increasingly to tell the same lies. As you may have heard me say already: “Can anyone remember a sermon that says the purpose of life is sacrifice? Have you heard any sermons that remind people that artificial birth control is gravely immoral? Or a funeral sermon that doesn’t canonize the deceased?: “Aunt Alexandra was a wonderful, caring person. She was loved by all three of her wives and will be greatly missed by her current husband whom she married after her operation. She was literally father and mother to both of her children and we know that she is in heaven with Jesus.”
Well, maybe she is. And, then again, maybe he’s not! We have lost our minds — and to point out the fact that we have lost our minds is impolite. It is hate speech.
Give me pie in the sky. It can’t be any worse than the pie in the face that we are currently enduring.

ARE YOU AWARE OF THE FACT that the United Methodist Church has ruled that one of its pastors who had been “defrocked” because he officiated at a same-sex wedding has now been “refrocked”?
The Rev. Frank Schaefer is the former pastor of the Zion United Methodist Church of Iona in Lebanon PA. Bishop Minerva Carcaño of the California-Pacific Conference of the UMC, has offered Pastor Schaefer a position of pastoral ministry to college students. He has accepted this offer and will be moving to Santa Barbara CA.
On Monday, 30 June, Pastor Schaefer will be going to the White House, together with his son, Tim, and Tim’s husband, John Duncan, in order to be recognized at a Gay Pride event hosted by President Obama. Lovely!
The United Methodist Church still has on its books a prohibition on clergy officiating at same-sex marriages.
This prohibition will be “revisited” the next time the UMC holds a General Conference, which I think will be in 2016. Dollars to doughnuts that the UMC will vote to abolish the rule that clergy may not officiate at same-sex marriages!
Our Protestant brothers and sisters are finding out the hard way that “Scriptura sola” is a foolish and untenable principle. People are geniuses at making the Bible say whatever they want it to say. That’s why the Catholic Church insists on “Scripture and Tradition”. Scripture privately interpreted without Sacred Tradition lends itself to all sorts of inanities and insanities. And, of course, Sacred Tradition is governed by the infallible magisterium of the indefectible Church. In case you wonder what “the indefectible Church” is, it is the Church governed by the Bishop of Rome, the successor of Saint Peter. It is the ancient Catholic Church.
