I received the following email this past week.

Everything about the email made it look official and genuine. It had, in every way, the “look” of an email from Verizon.
The fact is that I do have my credit card registered with Verizon for my personal (not parish) account, with authorization for automatic payment of my monthly bill.
There has never been any problem with my credit card so far, and I wondered why there would be a problem now.
So, I clicked the link to find out what kind of “update” my credit card information needed.
The form looked authentic BUT ……. It asked me some questions that just didn’t seem legit to me — e.g. my full Social Security number (not just the last four digits) and my mother’s middle and maiden names. I said to myself, “It will be a chilly day in Hell before I give Verizon my SS number, let alone my mother’s middle and maiden names. Next thing they’ll be asking me whether or not I still take my teddy bear to bed with me and, if so, what is the teddy bear’s middle name.” (Just between you and me, I haven’t taken my teddy bear to bed with me since I was about five, maybe six.)
So, I deleted the email.
Later on, I verified (via Google Chrome) that I had been on a “phishing website”. A phishing website is one that is designed to trick people into disclosing their logins, passwords and / or other sensitive information by disguising themselves as other websites that are trustworthy.
I’m glad I smelled a rat before I sent any personal info to those blankety-blank crooks who tried to rob me blind. So, PLEASE BE ADVISED: If the bad guys are after me, as surely as God makes little green apples, they’re after you too!

SOME OF PHIL ROBERTSON’S RELIGIOUS / MORAL BELIEFS
(All of the following are excerpted from the controversial article in GQ.)

“We’re Bible-thumpers who just happened to end up on television,” he tells me. “You put in your article that the Robertson family really believes strongly that if the human race loved each other and they loved God, we would just be better off. We ought to just be repentant, turn to God, and let’s get on with it, and everything will turn around.”

What does repentance entail? Well, in Robertson’s worldview, America was a country founded upon Christian values (Thou shalt not kill, etc.), and he believes that the gradual removal of Christian symbolism from public spaces has diluted those founding principles. (He and Si take turns going on about why the Ten Commandments ought to be displayed outside courthouses.) He sees the popularity of Duck Dynasty as a small corrective to all that we have lost.

“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong,” he says. “Sin becomes fine.”
What, in your mind, is sinful?
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

“If you simply put your faith in Jesus coming down in flesh, through a human being, God becoming flesh living on the earth, dying on the cross for the sins of the world, being buried, and being raised from the dead—yours and mine and everybody else’s problems will be solved. And the next time we see you, we will say: ‘You are now a brother. Our brother.’ So then we look at you totally different then. See what I’m saying?”

The Bible passage that got Phil in trouble was First Corinthians, Chapter Six, Verses Nine to Eleven. So, let’s take a look at it. Let’s be real high class and take a look at it in the original Greek!
Here it is!


Now let’s look at two Protestant and one Catholic translations of the passage.

1 Corinthians 6, 9 - 11
KING JAMES VERSION
:
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

NEW AMERICAN STANDARD BIBLE: Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE: Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor sodomites nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. That is what some of you used to be; but now you have had yourselves washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.

It seems to me that all three translations are in agreement on the matter of homosexual activity, aka sodomy, viz. that the unrepentant (that’s a vitally important qualifier) practitioners of homosexuality will not inherit the Kingdom of God. As far as I know, that means that unrepentant (there’s that vitally important qualifier again) sodomites are not going to go to Heaven but will, on the contrary, go elsewhere, i.e. to a place not pleasant. This is not judgmental. It’s just pointing out the facts. So, I would have to say that Phil Robertson’s take on homosexuality is faithful to the Word of God.
In my opinion, his moral theology (at least on that topic) is just ducky!
(That was too easy! Sorry about that!)

PLEASE NOTE: I had been anticipating receipt of this letter from the Chancery. It is “standard operating procedure” to send such a letter once a year to any priest past the age of 75 who is still on active duty. I notice a slight typo in this letter. The second line of the first sentence should read “resignation as Pastor of etc.”
I shall be writing to the Bishop on this matter very soon and shall print my letter in a subsequent bulletin.
