FROM: MRS PERVEEN AL MAHMOUDI.

MY EMAIL: perveenaa@gmail.com.
MY FAX NUMBER: +60321784103. Or +60321784233

ATTENTION: EDWARD B CONNOLLY

I am Mrs Perveen AL mahmoudi the wife of Mr AL Baghdadi AL mahmoudi who was the last prime minister of Libya under late moammar Gadhafi and my husband is presently in detention in Libya waiting for the day he will die because this present government are bent on killing anybody that worked under moammar Gadhafi. We were devoted Muslims but I have changed to a born again Christian since October last year. I’m presently in a hospital here in Malaysia battling with stroke and cancer and before the fall of moammar Gadhafi’s government my husband deposited $88. Million dollars (eighty eighth million us dollar) in a banks vault here in Malaysia SINCE 2006, Recently my doctor told me that I had a terminating illness (cancer) that would last for the next SEVEN months. Though what disturbs me most is my stroke sickness, having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to either a Christian organization or a devoted Christian individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct here in. I want this Christian organization or individual to use this money in all sincerity to fund churches, school, orphanages, widows and also propagating the word of God and to ensure that the society upholds the views and beliefs of the holy bible. The holy bible emphasized so much on the giving of alms, charity and this has encouraged me in taking this bold step. I took this decision because all my husband’s relatives are Muslims and I don’t want a situation where this money will be used in an unholy manner hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I don’t need any telephone communications, my doctor warned me to stop talking on the telephone secondly I can’t discuss in the presence of my husband’s relatives for they always stay with me in the hospital. As soon as I receive your reply I will now give you instructions on how to contact the vault manager where my husband deposited the funds. Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing for another Christian organization or a devoted Christian for the same purpose, may the Almighty God continue to guide and protect you. Amen.

Yours faithfully,
pvm
Mrs Perveen AL mahmoudi
Note: I will give you more details when I receive you reply through my email address or fax number, I can fax and send faxes with my lap top computer or you can send a text message sms from your mobile phone to my mobile.

My reaction: First of all, let me assure everyone that I have not sent “Mrs. Perveen Al Mahmoudi” my email address or fax number! I print this letter in the bulletin for two reasons: (a) because I found it very entertaining and I like to share things that I think are funny; (b) because I want to caution people about this kind of letter. I can’t imagine that anyone in Girardville or vicinity could possibly be so gullible as to respond to this kind of letter. But, on the other hand, I say to myself, “You never know!” As P.T. Barnum observed, “There’s a sucker born every minute!” People who send out letters like this “play the percentages”. I presume that thousands of these letters were sent out. When you consider that it costs four Malaysian ringgits (the equivalent of 64 cents American) to mail each letter and if we estimate that only one thousand of them were sent out, that’s $640.00 that someone spent on a “fishing expedition”! That’s an investment that’s looking for a return. If only one person were to respond, it could be worth the sender’s while. Maybe you know some elderly person who has some money invested somewhere and who is not worldly wise. Maybe you could ask him or her if he or she has received any such letters! It might be your grandmother!!

IF YOU WATCH BILL O’REILLY, you know that he starts off each program with what he calls “Talking Points”. I have my DVR set to record O’Reilly and, sometime late at night, after I’ve said my prayers, I pour a glass of ginger ale (on the rocks!) and sit down to see what The Great Man has to tell me.
As readers of this bulletin are aware, I have an ambiguous relationship with Mr. O. There are times when he hits the nail on the head and there are times when he is wide of the mark. There are times when he pleases me and there are times when he infuriates me. One way or the other, I find him entertaining.
This past Wednesday (06 Feb) he started off his “Talking Points Memo” with a video of an 18-year-old gal (Ms. Soto) who was being arraigned before a judge for something or other. The judge had just finished what he had to say to her and then told her to step back. She then told the judge that he could “blank himself”. The judge, rightfully indignant, summoned her back to the bench and sentenced her to thirty days in the slammer for contempt of court. — Way to go, your Honor!
Here is Bill’s “homily” on that incident:

Many Americans simply are disrespectful. They feel they can do whatever they want to do and Ms. Soto is a good example of that. The reason there is an epidemic of disrespect in America is mainly because of the public school system.
Here in New York City, the nation's largest public school operation, educators have softened the discipline code. So now students can curse at their teachers and simply get a reprimand. No suspension, just a little scolding. New York City education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said the new rules will keep the kids who commit low level infractions in class where they can learn from their mistakes. Yeah, sure!
As a former teacher, I know if the system allows students to curse out teachers in front of other students, all discipline breaks down. By the way, that's one of the reasons I send my kids to Catholic school in New York State.
Disrespect is everywhere. On the Net, troubled people say the most horrendous things hiding behind their machines. On television, reality programs are off-the-chart irresponsible. Shows like "Jersey Shore" and this idiot thing in West Virginia debase our culture all day long.

MY COMMENT
I remember — way back in the Summer of 1965 — being in school in Puerto Rico. I was a deacon and the Diocese had sent two other deacons and me to the Universidad Catolica de Ponce for Spanish-language instruction and, on the side, some instruction in Puerto Rican history and culture.
I remember one of the professors telling us that “respeto” (respect) is a high value among Puerto Ricans.
He said, in fact, that one of the worst rebukes a parent or other authority figure can deliver to a child or a teenager is “¡TE FALTA RESPETO!”. Translation: “YOU DON’T HAVE ANY RESPECT!”
The professor added that the only appropriate response from the child or teenager being accused of lacking respect is to hang his or her head down in shame!
I encourage parents in our community to make note of this. To raise a RESPECTFUL child is very much to your credit and is a blessing to the community. To raise a child who is DISRESPECTFUL is, quite frankly, not at all to your credit and imposes an unwelcome burden on the community.

 THE GREAT CHINESE AUCTION
is only two weeks off!
On SUNDAY, the TWENTY-FOURTH DAY of FEBRUARY,
in the Year of the Lord Two Thousand Thirteen,
on or about the hour of TWELVE NOON
folks from hither and yon will gather in
THE GREAT SAINT VINCENT dePAUL PARISH HALL
located at SECOND and “C” STREETS in the VILLE OF GIRARD
in order to appraise, to admire, and even to covet, though not sinfully,
the assembled treasures and goods.
They will take tickets, which they will have purchased,
and place these tickets in bags that have been affixed to the table in front of each of the prizes.
And then, at precisely TWO O’CLOCK OF THE AFTERNOON,
there shall commence THE AUCTION ITSELF!

Once the smaller treasures have been fairly and equitably distributed,
there shall be the DRAWINGS for the GREATER PRIZES.
There will be GREAT SUSPENSE while all listen to see if,
maybe, ,possibly, perhaps
their own numbers will be called!
MANY SHALL BE CALLED. ONLY A FEW SHALL BE CHOSEN!
AH! ‘TWAS EVER THUS!
While all of the above is transpiring,
there will be the selling of delicious food and drink,
lovingly and skillfully prepared by the hands of the good women of
THE HOLY ROSARY SOCIETY.
You are welcome to attend this annual festivity.
In order to participate, you would do well to purchase in advance
a packet of tickets costing a mere FIFTEEN DOLLARS.
These tickets will gain you admission and will provide you with chances
on the goods to be auctioned.
And, of course, you will want to purchase additional tickets
for additional chances at the Festivity itself!
Bring your mother, your father, your sisters and brothers, your uncles and aunts, your nephews and nieces. Bring your sisters-in-law and your brothers-in-law. Bring the little old lady from up the street and the little old man from down the street. Bring one and all! They will be grateful that you did!

FRIENDS OF MINE invited me to go out with them this past Tuesday evening (05 Feb) for supper. They chose a popular restaurant located in Northumberland County, not too far from Girardville. The waitress brought us the menus and, as usual, my eyes went towards the seafood section.
Looking over the selections, I found several options that looked good to me and one option that did not look good to me.
Smart phones enable all of us to be photographers. So, here is a photo of the relevant part of the menu. See if you can find what I am referring to.
In case anyone cares to know, I ordered the broiled seafood taster and a side of spaghetti with butter and garlic sauce. Very good!
RUMORS OF MY DEMISE: Don’t believe everything you hear in the Giant!
I went to St. Patrick’s in Pottsville this past Tuesday morning (05 Feb) in order to concelebrate the funeral Mass of a dear old woman. After the Mass, I chatted briefly with a member of my former parish. (I’ll call her “Woman #1”.) She told me that she had been conversing with “Woman #2” in the Giant Supermarket in Pottsville on Saturday, 02 Feb. Woman #2 asked Woman #1 if she had heard the news that Fr. Connolly had died. Woman #1 said that she had not heard this news but was as certain as she could be that it was not true. Seeing me at the funeral confirmed her suspicion that it was not true. She said that she was glad it was not true. I thanked her and told her that I was also glad that it was not true. Obviously, if we all wait long enough, it will be true that I am dead but, then again, so will you be dead! So, there! We’ll be even! Well, that’s the way it goes! Blame Adam and Eve! Blame the Serpent! If I could figure out a way to get to Heaven without the inconvenience of dying, I would certainly go for it. However, I have pretty much made up my mind just to bite the bullet when the time comes and lie down, preferably without any big fuss, and die. No big deal! I don’t expect to be dead for very long. Of course, in preparation, I shall try to continue to obey the Ten Commandments, to love Jesus, to be sorry for my sins, to be faithful to Mass and Holy Communion, to say my prayers, to forgive sinners, to be patient with the grouchy people I run into and not to be anxious about anything.
