WE SHARE THE MAIL
Fr. Connolly
:
I want to thank you for the kind and generous donation of the hymn books for the SCI-Cresson Catholic community. Their eyes lit up and they almost clapped with glee. (Almost, they’re still men). Anyway, they were a much needed enhancement to the worship of our Lord Jesus for these men and they greatly appreciate it.
Chaplain Matt McCoy
FCPD
SCI-CRESSON
Dear Chaplain McCoy:

You are most welcome!
Thank you for facilitating this matter.
If there are any other religious materials you think the residents could use, feel free to let me know.
I have in mind such things as rosaries (plastic to meet prison regulations), cloth scapulars and Bibles (Protestant and / or Catholic versions).
In Christ Jesus –
Fr. Edward B. Connolly
Background to this email
: Rev. Matt McCoy is a Protestant minister. He is the institutional chaplain at the Cresson State Correctional Institution. A friend of mine who is an inmate at Cresson asked Chaplain McCoy to contact me to see whether I could obtain some hymnbooks for the use of the Catholic inmates at their Masses and other chapel services. So, I contacted the Diocese. They told me to go to “the diocesan warehouse” (where used religious goods are stored) and pick up whatever I needed. Ian and I drove down there and picked up fifty hymnbooks, which we then sent to the prison.
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN to the gentleman (he prefers to remain anonymous) who has arranged for a check for $250.00 to be sent from his account each month to Saint Joseph Parish. He is a former parishioner. We have received three such donations so far.
THE CANDLE IN FRONT OF THE INFANT OF PRAGUE (StVdP) burns this week in memory of Harry and Edna Calvert, at the request of Sharon Smith.

THE SERPENT OF GENESIS THREE IS ALIVE AND WELL AND IS GIVING LECTURES ON PBS, in addition to which he is still getting a lot of mileage out of his classic con job. You know which serpent and what con job I’m referring to, do you not? I’m talking about the serpent who sidled up to Mother Eve in order to inquire as to her well-being and her level of satisfaction with her situation in the Garden of Paradise. He asked her — oh, so casually, of course — whether it was true that God had told her and her husband, Adam that they were not allowed to eat the fruit from any of the trees in the Garden. She, of course, told the serpent “Oh no, Mr. Serpent Man! God said we could eat the fruit from any of the trees in the Garden, with just one exception. He said we must not eat the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. That’s all! Just that one tree! That’s the only one that he forbade us to eat from!” And Mr. Serpent Man considered her answer and said, “Honey, did it ever occur to you just why God doesn’t want you to eat the fruit from that particular tree?” And Mother Eve said, “Well, to tell you the truth, the question did cross my mind once or twice, but I figure that God is very smart and He has our best interests in mind and I’m sure He knows what’s best for us!”
At that point, Mr. Serpent Man sneered a serpenty sneer and said, “Don’t bet on it, sweetheart! I’ve been around for a long time, long before Adam and you ever came on the scene. And, believe me, I know that Person you call ‘God’. I know Him inside and out! I grant you that He is a fairly impressive guy and, quite frankly, has a few good qualities but — I’m sorry to say — He’s kind of stuck on Himself, if you know what I mean. He thinks He’s the cat’s pajamas! I spoke up to Him once when He was throwing His weight around up there in His executive suite where He was presiding at a meeting with some of His top flunkies. (You see, I used to be one of his flunkies, until I wised up.) So, He banged His fist on the table when I dared to challenge Him and He said, ‘Listen up, Lucifer! It’s My way or the highway!’ Well, I wasn’t going to let Him get away with that nonsense, so I said, ‘In that case, I’ll take the highway!’ So He went ballistic and said, ‘You’ve got exactly five minutes to pack up and get out of here.’ So, I said, ‘Okay, buddy! Have it Your way! I’m out of here! Don’t call me. I’ll call You!’”
“That’s very interesting, Mr. Serpent Man. So, what are you telling me? Are you telling me that Adam and I should eat the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil?”
“Well, I’m not telling you what to do, sweetie pie! I don’t boss anyone around! I’m 100% pro-choice. I just present you with the options!”
“But, you know, God said that if we eat any of that fruit, we’ll die. I’m not sure what ‘die’ means, but I think it’s a negative kind of experience.”
“Die??” said the serpent. “Are you out of your mind? That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in my life! You absolutely will not die!! I guarantee you that you won’t die! Actually, it will be the opposite. It’s only after you eat that fruit that you’ll start to live. In fact — and I don’t know if I should tell you this or not because it’s kind of a secret known only to the inner circle, the intelligentsia — ADAM AND YOU WILL BECOME GODS EQUAL TO THE SO-CALLED ‘ONLY GOD’ ONLY IF YOU EAT THE FRUIT FROM THIS TREE! You see now why this so-called ‘only God’ doesn’t want you to eat it. It’s because then you will be equal to Him and you’ll be in charge. Then you’ll be able to tell Him to go take a flying leap next time He tries to tell you what you may or may not do!”
Well, as you very well know, Mother Eve saw that the fruit was lovely to look at and had a delightful aroma and, so, she plucked one from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and took a bite or two and then called her husband to take a bite and, at first, he said, “You know, Sugar, I’m not sure we should be doing this. I mean, after all, God did tell us not to do it and He said that we would die (whatever that means, but I think it’s a negative experience) if we did it. So are you sure I should do this?
And Eve said, “Well, I was just talking to Mr. Serpent Man. He used to be one of God’s top managers and He guaranteed me — cross his heart and hope to die — that we wouldn’t die if we did it and, besides, we’ll be equal to God if we do it. I have this feeling, deep down, that we can trust Mr. Serpent Man. He is a really, really cool guy and I don’t think he would lie to me. I just think it’s a risk we ought to take.”

MORAL OF THE STORY (or at least one particular moral of the story) for those who are wise enough to take this seriously.
On Easter Sunday night, I sat down in front of the TV in order to watch a program I had recorded on the DVR, viz. the Masterpiece Theatre production of Charles Dickens’s “Great Expectations”.
When I finished watching it, because the TV was already tuned to Channel 44, which (on Direct TV) is WVIA, the PBS channel, I just happened to see WAYNE DYER standing on a stage, giving one of his lectures. This particular series of lectures is entitled “Wishes Fulfilled”.
Do you know who Wayne Dyer is? He is “an internationally known lecturer and author of thirty books”. He is a psychologist and, for some years, has been putting out self-help books. Many years ago, he was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show. His career really took off after that exposure. It is probable that, without Oprah’s support and promotion, he would be stuck in an office somewhere in Sheboygan, dispensing advice to troubled persons.
The lecture was set in a theatre. Wayne was dressed casually: plaid shirt and sleeveless sweater and, for some reason, a beret. He speaks fluently and confidently and moves around the stage with utmost confidence. He oozes confidence and charm. The people in the audience were — so it seemed to me — transfixed with what he was telling them. I estimate them to be persons who are (mostly) college graduates, middle class, sophisticated, jaded contraceptors. They were probably persons who had tried religion but found it wanting. I have no doubt that there were a lot of ex-Catholics among them. Looking at them I felt so sorry for them. They looked like sheep who had been looking for a shepherd and thought that they had finally found one in Wayne Dyer. What they didn’t realize was that Wayne was feeding them substantially the same line that Mr. Serpent Man fed to Mother Eve.
Without further ado, let me place before your eyes some of the very words Wayne was feeding his audience. Then judge for yourselves! All of these are direct quotations, tediously scribbled down by yours truly from the TV and checked for accuracy.

This is the ineffable secret,
the ultimate illumination,
the key to peace and power:
YOU ARE GOD!
Those are the three magic words.
If you will accept this towering truth
and dare to stand atop this magnificent pinnacle,
Universal Consciousness will be revealed to you from within.
God is there.
It is he who peers from behind YOUR eyes,
who is YOUR own consciousness,
who is YOUR very self.
YOU are not just a part of God.
YOU are altogether God
and God is altogether YOU.”
God is love,
pure unconditional, blissful love.
YOU are the I AM THAT I AM.”

Just in case it is not already perfectly clear to you, let me stress the fact that the words quoted here are what is sometimes known as “Gnosticism” and sometimes as “Neo-Hinduism” and sometimes as “New Age”. It is snake oil and a monstrous lie. It is bovine fecal deposit and is immensely popular among those who are headed for destruction.

TODAY — 15 APRIL 2012 — is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of
RMS TITANIC.

There were 2,228 passengers and crew members on board.
1,523 persons drowned.
705 survived.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

We might want to utilize this anniversary in order to contemplate the fact that all of us, regardless of who we are, are passengers on the Titanic.
This is a metaphor, of course, but it is true.
We resolve not to put our absolute trust in any merely human being,
much less in any human device or instrument,
regardless of how powerful or amazing or unsinkable he, she, it, they might seem.
The iceberg is out there.
It is unavoidable and it is just a matter of time.
No one will survive.
Wise and thoughtful passengers dedicate a good portion of their pre-iceberg time to preparing for their post-iceberg time.
To a great extent, that’s why we have this thing called “the Catholic religion”.

DIVINE MERCY DEVOTIONS
TODAY
SUNDAY, 15 APRIL
Q — Why are we having Divine Mercy devotions today?
A — Because today is DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY!!!
(I can’t think of a better reason!)
Where?
St. Vincent dePaul Church
What time?
03:00 pm
What are we going to do?
Expose the Blessed Sacrament.
Sing the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
Say a prayer or two.
Process around the Church with the image of the Divine Mercy and with the Blessed Sacrament.

Should you attend?
Well, you know, it all depends.
So, let me give you two answers:
Answer #01 is for those who do not need mercy, who are cool with God, who “don’t do nothin’ bad”, who are confident they can “stand on their own two feet” on Judgment Day, go “mano a mano” with God and just dare Him to point out any defects or failings in the way they have lived their lives.
So, for those folks, the answer is NO. There is really no reason to come.
Answer #02 is for poor, miserable sinners, people who really need mercy, who have messed up in their lives once or twice or God only knows how many times, people who are incompetent to save themselves, people who will need to tremble before the Divine Majesty on Judgment Day unless they are the recipients of abundant mercy.
For those folks, the answer is YES. It would be a very good idea to come.
