Correction
There was a Mass on 6 February 2007 for the late Albert J. Laplaca. In the bulletin, it was noted that the Mass marked the 60th anniversary of his wedding. This was incorrect. It marked the 70th anniversary of his wedding. In other words, Albert and Julia were married on 6 Feb 1937, not 6 Feb 1947. This is an important correction. It might not seem all that important to you. However, Julia thinks it is important. And we can understand why she thinks so!
We apologize for the misprint.

 NEWS YOU CAN USE!

BARBRA STREISAND has contributed money to the campaigns of three persons who have announced that they will seek the office of President of the United States in 2008. These three persons are:

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY)
Senator Barack Obama (D-IL)
(Former Senator) John Edwards (D-NC)

My reason for including this news item in our bulletin is as follows: I sometimes look to Barbra Streisand for guidance in deciding which candidates I will or will not support. Perhaps you do the same.

 DEPARTMENT OF BETTER-LATE-THAN-NEVER:
NEWS ITEMS WE FORGOT TO PUT IN THE BULLETIN
a) The Christmas Collection (2006) at St. Joseph Parish amounted to $7,730.00.
b) The Christmas Collection (2006) at St. Francis deSales Parish amounted to $440.00.

NEWS ITEM

DON'T MARRY
A MAMA'S BOY
[OR GIRL]!

There are three Church tribunals that operate in Rome.
One of these is known as
The Tribunal of the Roman Rota - "The Rota" for short.
One of the principal duties of The Rota is the adjudication of petitions for nullity of marriage.
According to the statistics recently released for 2005, the judges of The Rota looked at 1,637 petitions for declarations of nullity ("annulments"). Of these 1,637, they granted 67.
According to an analysis of the statistics, the Rota judges agreed to declare the nullity of the marriages of several couples, one or both of whom was judged to be so dependent on a parent as to be unfit for marriage.
They enunciated the following principle:
"The overbearing influence of a mother or father meant that the psychological autonomy needed for marriage was lacking".

stjos/stfds: 02.11.2007 - 07

COMMENT
My reason for inserting this news item (page 7) into the bulletin is simply this: To the extent that any of us can influence someone's choice of a husband or wife, we should keep in mind that psychological autonomy is essential to happy marriage.
It is a fine thing to be attentive to and devoted to one's parents. It is not at all a fine thing to be so attentive and devoted to one's parents that one loses a sense of priorities.

LET IT BE SHOUTED FROM THE ROOFTOPS:
#1 - Once a man takes a wife, his duty to his wife takes precedence over his duty to his mother.
#2 - Love for one's wife is a higher calling than love for one's mother.
#3 - Love for one's mother must be subsumed into the bigger picture, viz. love for one's wife.
#4 - A man ought not take a wife unless and until he accepts this.

"For this cause, a man
(a) leaves his father and mother
(b) clings to his wife
(c) and the two become one flesh."
[cf. Gen 2,24; Mt 19,5; Eph 5,31]

Dear Prospective Husbands and Wives:
Please don't cling to one another
and please don't become one flesh
unless and until
you leave your father and mother!

ONE OF THE FRINGE BENEFITS of being the pastor of a parish which has produced a seminarian is that you get two free meals each year.
One of these free meals is the Bishop's annual Christmas luncheon for seminarians and their pastors. The other is the annual supper held in March at St. Borromeo Seminary for pastors of seminarians.
Yours truly has been enjoying these free meals for the past few years because Chris Butera (now known as Reverend Mr. Christopher S. Butera) is a member of St. Joseph Parish. Only one more free meal is left: the one on 7 March 07 at the Seminary.
We anticipate that, God willing, Chris will be ordained to the priesthood in June of 2007.
The downside of this otherwise happy event is that the free meals for yours truly will come to a screeching halt!
The only remedy for this is that some young man of St. Joseph Parish or St. Francis deSales Parish enter the seminary this coming August.

Need I say more?
Are there any takers?
Anyone? Anyone?

A REQUEST FOR PRAYERS
My son, Chad, has been shot in Fallujah. I want to get everyone to pray for him.
Today, Sunday, I got a call from the Army that Chad has been shot in the head.
I am asking for all your prayers.
He was in a Humvee going through Fallujah, and a gang of militia fighters fired on the Humvee and hit Chad in the head. The driver got him out of the city and took him to Baghdad. At first he was listed in terminal condition, but now has been upgraded to stable / critical.
His Dad and I are on standby to fly to Washington, then on to Germany as soon as the military calls us to go. They are trying to stabilize him enough to fly him to Germany, and at that time we will leave.
Please pray that my son will not have brain damage and that he will be restored and healed by the blood of Jesus, by the grace of God.
I ask for you to pass this prayer request on, so there will be many prayer warriors praying for him.
Thank you so much and will try to keep you updated on his condition.
God Bless,
Vicky Field
Granbury, Texas
COMMENT
Mrs. Field is a Catholic. She sent this email to members of her Cursillo prayer group. It came to me from my brother-in-law who is active in Cursillo.
It touched my heart and jolted me out of my tendency towards self-centeredness.
If you have the same tendency, perhaps it will jolt you as well.
Let us pray for Chad and for all who suffer from the war.

A PRAYER FOR VICKIE LYNN - aka ANNA NICOLE
Dear Holy Mother of God:
A woman died suddenly this past week.
Her name - at least the name by which she was best known in this valley of tears - is Anna Nicole. You know her as Vickie Lynn.
I want to put in a good word for her. I want to ask you to pray for her to your Son, Jesus. Ask Him to have mercy on her. Ask Him to give her whatever good break He can possibly give her. Even if He has to bend the rules a little bit, ask Him please to take her to Himself.
One reason why I am "praying in public" for her is this: I think that relatively few persons who knew her personally or who (like me) have only heard about her are praying for her. I am hoping that, by "praying in public" for her, I might influence someone else to pray for her. To most people, she is unreal, a cartoon character, an object of lust or ridicule or scorn or some of each. To Jesus and to you, she is a poor, banished daughter of Eve.
Quite frankly, dear Mother, Vickie Lynn was not any paragon of womanly virtue. I don't think you need me to spell it out for you. You get the picture. I won't elaborate.
But, let me tell you a few things about her background that help me to understand what she was up against. Anna Nicole Smith's name at birth was Vickie Lynn Hogan. When she was born (28 Nov 67), her father, Donald Hogan, was twenty and her mother, Virgie Mae Tabers Hogan, was sixteen. Donald had a roving eye. He didn't hang around very long. He left his wife and baby before Vickie Lynn was two years old. Subsequently, Virgie Mae married four more times. She is now on her fifth husband. So, you see, holy Mother, there was not a whole lot of stability in Vickie Lynn's home life. For that alone, I think she deserves some special consideration.
Vickie Lynn failed her freshman year in high school and dropped out of school. Then she got a job as a waitress at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken. When she was 17, she got pregnant by a 16-year-old boy named Billy Smith. God bless her, she married Billy! Give her some credit for that! Not long after she had given birth to a son (Danny Smith), Billy left her. So, she took her baby and moved to the big city to get a job at Wal-Mart.
Some men who saw her only as a sex object offered her a job as an exotic dancer at a night club in Houston. That was what got her started on the downward spiral. I'm referring to the pornographic poses and the whole sordid lifestyle we hear about.
Holy Mother, I invoke your pity for her and your Son's mercy for her. If there is any way that you can find whereby she can be brought into the light perpetual, please find it.
May the Blood of Jesus Christ wash away the sins of our sister, Vickie Lynn. May she kneel at the feet of the Savior and bathe His feet with her tears.
Remember, most compassionate Virgin Mary, that never was it known ………
Amen.

WE ALL HAVE OUR CROSSES!
One of Fr. Connolly's crosses is that, every once in a while, he gets an anonymous letter from some gentleman who accuses him of being an apostate, a heretic, a schismatic, an ex-priest (and other lovely things).
Why?
Because, quite some time ago, Fr. Connolly had the temerity to say in the bulletin that he thinks that it is possible (but by no means certain) that God created the bodies of the original human beings [Adam and Eve] from non-human hominids by breathing immortal soul into them.
Fr. Connolly also said that he submits entirely and without reservation to the judgment of the Magisterium of Holy Mother Church in this matter, just in case the Magisterium ever rules on it.
Since I cannot respond directly to someone who is so cowardly, I need to use the bulletin - which is not such a bad idea, because it serves as an instrument for instructing others.
Here is what Pope Pius XII had to say on the matter, way back in 1950:

The Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter-for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God.

Humani Generis

From the point of view of the gentleman referred to above, this probably makes Pius XII an apostate, a heretic, a schismatic, an ex-priest, etc.
I find great security being in company with Pius XII.

Be humble. Trust always and a great deal in divine Providence;never never must you let yourselves be discouraged, despite contrary winds. I say it again: trust in God and Mary Immaculate; be faithful and forge ahead!
Saint Pauline Visintainer

This weekend [10 / 11 Feb], through the kindness of Albert Visintainer, a cousin of St. Pauline and a resident of Kulpmont (PA), we are able to offer for blessing and for veneration a first-class relic of Saint Pauline.
After each Mass, we invite you to come forward to venerate the relic.
Saint Pauline (1865 - 1942) was born in Italy. When she was a child, her family immigrated to Brazil. She is the foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.
She is the patron saint of all who suffer from diabetes and of all who suffer from chronic illness. She herself suffered from diabetes, even to the point of the amputation of her right arm.
Her feastday is 9 July.
