 LAST WEEKEND'S COLLECTION TOTALS:
16/17 SEPTEMBER

Saint Joseph Parish
$1,143.00
from the envelopes and $109.00 from the plate. Thank you.
When one deducts from the sum of these two figures, $1,252.00 the parish's weekly financial obligation to the Diocese, i.e. assessments, $358.85 plus the weekly premiums for property and liability insurance, $149.20, the sum of which is $508.05, plus its weekly obligation to All Saints School, $987.21, the sum total of which is $1,495.26, one sees that ($243.26) of this collection is available for operating the parish. This is a deficit!

Saint Francis deSales Parish
$114.00
from the envelopes and $64.05 from the plate. Thank you.
When one deducts from the sum of these two figures, $178.05 the parish's weekly financial obligation to the Diocese, i.e. assessments, $55.15 plus the weekly premiums for property and liability insurance, $56.72, the sum of which is $111.87, plus its weekly obligation to All Saints School, $197.44, the sum total of which is $309.31, one sees that ($131.26) of this collection is available for operating the parish. For parents who have lost a child through miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth or in early infancy please join us at the Remembrance Mass "Forever in our Hearts," Sunday, 8 October 2006 at 3:00 P.M. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Bethlehem. Msgr. Edward Sacks will be the main celebrant.
For more information, or to register call 610-289-8900 x 230 for the Office of Pro-Life Activities. All families are invited. (Registration is not required but requested for planning for the social, which follows the Mass. You may register anonymously with just a number attending.)
PLEASE NOTE
The Tuesday morning Bible study this week (26 Sept) will be held on Thursday (28 Sept) because of the funeral Mass scheduled for Tuesday.
This raises the question: Is it even possible to have a Tuesday morning Bible Study on a Thursday morning? If it is held on Thursday morning, is it still the Tuesday morning Bible Study?
This is a profound question and demands some profound thinking.
TICKETS FOR THE SAINT JOSEPH PARISH 100th ANNIVERSARY DINNER will be mailed out to all parishioners very soon.
Please look for them in the mail and please return them - preferably with payment.
Remember that the dinner will be held on Sunday, 22 October, in the parish hall.
It will follow the 3:00 p.m. Mass celebrated by Bishop Cullen.

This coming Saturday - 30 September - the Church honors Saint Jerome, one of my favorite saints. This poem gives you something of the flavor of this magnificent man!
THE THUNDERER
by Phyllis McGinley

God's angry man,
His crotchety scholar
Was Saint Jerome,
The great name-caller
Who cared not a dime
For the laws of Libel
And in his spare time
Translated the Bible.
Quick to disparage
All joys but learning
Jerome thought marriage
Better than burning;
But didn't like woman's
Painted cheeks;
Didn't like Romans,
Didn't like Greeks,
Hated Pagans
For their Pagan ways,
Yet doted on Cicero all of his days.

A born reformer, cross and gifted,
He scolded mankind
Sterner than Swift did;
Worked to save
The world from the heathen;
Fled to a cave
For peace to breathe in,
Promptly wherewith
For miles around
He filled the air with
Fury and sound.
In a mighty prose
For Almighty ends,
He thrust at his foes,
Quarreled with his friends,
And served his Master,
Though with complaint.
He wasn't a plaster sort of a saint.
But he swelled men's minds
With a Christian leaven.
It takes all kinds
to make a heaven
.

THE PROFIT FROM LAST SUNDAY'S SPAGHETTI SUPPER came to $735.26.
Thank you!
One must keep in mind that this is a very good profit for the first spaghetti supper of the season. This is due to the fact that the expenditures for the first supper of the season are usually greater than for the remaining suppers.
NEXT SPAGHETTI SUPPER is Sunday, 1 October! Notify your taste buds! Notify your friends and neighbors! Notify all the ships at sea!
PLEASE PRAY FOR a woman who died on 16 September. Josephine Piccioni Motto, age 93, is the sister of St. Joseph parishioner Frank Piccioni.
Eternal rest grant unto Josephine, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Please note: The first name, the married name and the age of the deceased are very similar to the first name, the married name and the age of a member of St. Joseph Parish. These are two separate and distinct persons. The latter is alive and well and, we hope, will remain so for a good many more years!
THERE WILL BE A MASS (last Monday of the month) at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 25 September, at the Simon Kramer Institute in New Philadelphia. After the Mass, there will be the opportunity to venerate the first-class relic of St. Pauline Visintainer. If you wish to attend this Mass, but need a ride, call St. Joseph Rectory.

JESSE JOSEPH KRIZNO,
a member of Saint Joseph Parish, died on Thursday, 21 September.
Born on 7 November 1917, he was 88 years old.
Jesse is one of the three children of the late John and Mary (Lubinsky) Krizno.
He was baptized at St. Anthony Church, Cumbola, on 11 November 1917.
On 27 November 1952, at St. Joseph Church, in the presence of Fr. Corcoran, he married Elizabeth Manzo, who survives him.
Both of Jesse's siblings are deceased: Leo Korizno (sic) and Mary Krizno.
Jesse has three children, all of whom survive him: John J. Krizno; Mary A. Krizno; Joseph J. Krizno.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Jesse will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church on Tuesday, 26 September, at 10:00 a.m., with a viewing in the church for one hour prior to the Mass.
The interment will take place in the parish cemetery.

The following is an interesting (I think!) little anecdote connected with Jesse's death:
At the time of Jesse's death, his son, John, was in St. Joseph Church, assisting at (lectoring) the 7:00 p.m. Thursday Mass. Had John been able to foresee that his father would die during that hour, he probably would have "taken a pass" on going to Mass and gone to the hospital to be with him. But the Lord had something better in mind. John's attendance at Mass and reception of the Lord's Body and Blood at the time of his father's death did his father much good. It is certainly a plus, when going before the Lord for judgment, that one's own son is occupied in "declaring the death of the Lord until He comes".

Eternal rest grant unto Jesse, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

JA PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE PASTOR: Every once in a while, someone will ask me, "When will those TV programs you told us you recorded be shown on EWTN?" They are referring to a series of fourteen half-hour programs that I co-hosted. When asked, I have simply replied, "I don't know. I guess the folks at EWTN will let me know if and when they decide to run them." A few days ago, I was told that the programs have been approved. (All programs submitted have to go through a process of scrutinizing - which, of course, makes sense! They have to be checked out for orthodoxy and appropriateness.) So, it is my understanding that the programs will run on EWTN (one program per week, I suppose) starting in March of 2007.
The following is a description of the programs, which I took off the Internet.

Parents that need good information about preparing their children about approaching dating and marriage
Parishes or study groups
Engaged Couples
Even married couples can learn from this series
Tell a friend about the DVD
Retail: $49.98 --Your price: $49.98 (20% discount), plus s/h
Order copies to give as gifts!

If anyone wants to borrow a set of these DVD's from me, call the Rectory and ask. I have a few copies that I got for free to share with friends.
By the way, because I am paranoid, I need to tell you this: I did not, do not and shall not receive any money or compensation whatsoever for participating in these programs. I did get free transportation, meals and lodging for the four days I was in Alabama, but nothing other than that!

 PATRICK MOHAN,
son of
Francis P. Mohan, MD and Stella Modrijan Mohan
and
SILVIA CRISTINA LIMA ROCHA LOHMANN,
daughter of
Fernando Armbrust Lohmann and Eliana Lima Rocha Lohmann

became husband and wife in Christ Jesus on Saturday, 16 September 2006, during a Nuptial Mass celebrated at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito, Paraty, R.J., Brazil.
The priests who concelebrated the Mass and solemnized the union were Fathers Pedro dos Santos and Edward B. Connolly. The Mass and the marriage ceremony were celebrated in a mixture of Portuguese and English.
We gratefully acknowledge that the union of Patrick and Silvia now participates in and has been subsumed into "the Great Mystery" which is the nuptial union of Jesus Christ and His Holy Catholic Church.
Patrick spoke these solemn words to Silvia:
Eu, Patrick, te recebo, Silvia, por minha esposa, e te prometo ser fiel, amar-te e respeitar-te, na alegria e na tristeza, na saúde e na doença, todos os dias da nossa vida.

Silvia responded as follows:
I, Silvia, take you, Patrick, to be my husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.

May God bless, protect and guide this newly married couple. May He give them the grace they will need to fulfill their vows. May He make them fruitful, giving them the gift of children.
Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Mohan!

The following is the text of a letter received from George V. Lynett, Publisher of The (Scranton) Times Tribune. Mr. Lynett and other members of the Lynett family are the owners of a group of newspapers, one of which is our own local newspaper, The Pottsville Republican & Herald. The letter is dated 8 September 2006, but was not seen by me until 19 September.

September 8, 2006

Reverend Edward B. Connolly
Saint Joseph Parish
321 Howard Avenue
Pottsville PA 17901

Dear Father Connolly:
I am in receipt of your letter of September 4, 2006, including the prior responses of Mike Joyce, Pete Banko and our Publisher, Henry Nyce.
I believe you can understand and appreciate the policy implications of running the Ken's Tire Ad from this previous correspondence.
It is our long-standing philosophy to allow and encourage our publishers and their management teams to manage their newspaper independently, as if it were their own publication.
Personally, I do not feel the ad was "soft porn". The tastefulness of the content certainly could be debated. Reasonable people could arrive at different conclusions as to whether it should have been published or not.
My siblings and I firmly endorse and believe in the ability of Henry Nyce and his team to exercise good judgment.
Thank you for reading The Republican & Herald. I am sorry that we offended you and your parishioners.

Sincerely,

(signed)
George V. Lynett
Publisher
*************************************************************************************************************
My comment: This letter is pathetic, unworthy both of the writer and of the recipient. I am disappointed. I had thought the matter would be resolved via gentlemanly discourse, resulting in a meeting of minds. This has not happened. Consequently, we will expand our efforts to persuade the publisher, Mr. Nyce, and his management team to keep pornography out of our local newspaper, to observe fundamental moral standards, to protect the dignity of women. Our struggle is not against mere flesh and blood
.
